Ben Stokes encourages players to use county championship for England call-up

England captain Ben Stokes has praised the County Championship, urging players to see it as a key route into the national Test team ahead of the summer fixtures. With six Test matches scheduled against New Zealand and Pakistan, Stokes believes the tournament is a valuable opportunity for players to prove themselves.

Stokes has been particularly impressed with the emerging talent from the County Championship, with many players recently excelling and securing spots in the England Lions setup. He emphasised the importance of the early stages of the competition, as it provides players with a chance to showcase their skills and make a case for selection in the national side.

“I believe it’s a fantastic opportunity for many players across the country. We had the Lions in Australia at the same time as us, and when you look at the players coming through that system, the talent in England is undeniable. The depth of talent we have right now is probably as strong as it has been in a long time,” Ben Stokes said, as quoted on the ICC website.

Although Stokes had planned to feature for Durham in the County Championship, a broken cheekbone sustained during a training session has kept him out.

“The first six or seven weeks of Championship cricket will be crucial, and I think players should use this time to make a strong case for themselves. I hope they give themselves the best possible chance of being selected when we meet to make those decisions,” Stokes added.

After England’s disappointing 1-4 loss to Australia in the Ashes, spots in the Test side are up for grabs. With Zak Crawley’s place as an opener uncertain, players such as Asa Tribe (Glamorgan), Tom Haines (Sussex), and Ben McKinney (Durham) are expected to be in contention for a call-up.
