Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has come under scrutiny as the five-time champions continue to struggle in the Indian Premier League 2026. Former India player Sadagoppan Ramesh questioned Fleming’s impact without MS Dhoni leading the team. Ramesh mentioned that Fleming was successful when Dhoni led the team. CSK haven’t been able to dominate the rivals. After finishing last in 2025, the five-time champions have lost three consecutive matches in IPL 2026 and are currently in 10th spot.
“Fleming has never enjoyed success without MS Dhoni leading the side. Dhoni is behind Fleming’s impressive track record as a coach. With the way the game is moving forward, the coach should be treated like players,” Ramesh said.
“Stephen Fleming lacks the mindset needed for today’s aggressive game. He is five steps behind,” he added.
Dhoni handed the captain’s armband to Ruturaj Gaikwad in 2024, but the results haven’t been convincing. Fleming has been a part of all five of CSK’s titles, but without the legendary skipper, he is also finding it hard to get going.
CSK’s struggles in the 19th season are largely due to execution and strategy. The bowlers are leaking runs in the death overs and failing to take wickets. In a league where power-hitting and aggression are the need of the hour, CSK’s approach has been questionable.
The decision-makers surprisingly spend a lot of money on uncapped players in the mini auction, and it backfired as the young guns are not able to give match-winning performances. The youngsters lack experience, and the rival franchises are exploiting the shortcomings of the Men in Yellow. CSK are finding it hard to keep pace and play the game according to the demands of the sport.
Fleming hasn’t been able to win consistently in franchise leagues like Major League Cricket and SA20. Chennai were among the top teams during Dhoni’s captaincy era, but his departure has put the spotlight on Fleming.
